In Defensive Handgun I we learned the basic four (4) count draw, the efficient smooth presentation of a handgun and the effective placement of two to three rounds into a target. In most cases this in itself should end the confrontation, but as we all know things don't always work as we had hoped. This is the very reason we must prepare for times when things don't work as we had planned. If this is the case it is absolutely imperative that we transition immediately to "plan B," Movement. Two things happen when we move during a confrontation. First, we make ourselves a harder target to hit; secondly we reorganize the "action vs. reaction" continuum in our favor. We move from the reactionary mode to the pro-active position. It is now the perpetrator who must react to our actions. We have taken control of the fight and he/she must now play catch-up! Learning to move then shoot gives us a tremendous advantage over our advisory. And in developing these skills our chances of survival increase exponentially.
For class safety, each student may be required to re-holster their weapon prior to moving during certain exercises. While this may be contrary to optimum tactics, safety is of paramount importance during all training at Coal Creek Armory.
Unless otherwise indicated, all firing will be from the holster and will be "on command." It is extremely important that all students follow directions carefully and never anticipate range commands. This will be intensive training and as such no "horse-play" or any unsafe activity what-so-ever will be tolerated.
On command, the shooter will move to the lane next to them and immediately engage the target with two rounds, scan , "Check their 6" then re-holster. This will be repeated for ten to twenty repetitions.
This exercise will employ a stand with three dowels arranged vertically. On command the shooter will draw and fire two rounds from the right side of the far right dowel. The shooter will then move to the left of the dowel and fire two rounds. This sequence will continue until the shooter has fired two rounds from the left side of the far left dowel. At this point the shooter will perform a mandatory reload and repeat the exercise moving from left to right.
Movement in itself will make you a harder target to hit. However, moving with a purpose, for instance to cover or to put distance between you and the threat, should be your primary goal. The exercise in stage 3 will include decision making as you move.
This will be a timed qualification course firing from the three, seven, and ten yard lines and will include one hand shooting and mandatory reloads. Adding the element of time induces stress, even when firing from a stationary position. This is to demonstrate what specific shooting and gun handling skills need improvement.
